The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC)

EEOC Investigations & Legal Representation

The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) is the government agency which enforces federal laws relating to discrimination in work environments. It investigates complaints regarding discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, pregnancy, national origin, age, disability or genetic information. Allegations of discriminatory retaliation against employees who made a complaint, filed a charge or participated in an investigation or lawsuit regarding discrimination are also addressed by the EEOC. Hiring, training, promotions, firing, wages, benefits and harassment all fall under the discrimination laws enforced by the Commission.

When the EEOC investigates a complaint, they make a finding based on the factors they have assessed and try to settle the charge if they determine that discrimination has occurred. If this does not resolve the matter, they may choose to escalate proceedings to include litigation. Private sector employers, employment agencies, labor unions and local and state governments may all be investigated by the EEOC. If you have had a complaint made against you or are an employee making a complaint, enlist the help of a New Mexico employment law attorney. Your legal counsel can represent you during EEOC hearings and assist with appeals.
