Press Release: University of New Mexico welcomes Sylvia Lopez back to work

October 13, 2009. UNM, Coach Locksley and Sylvia Lopez announce that they have worked together to resolve any misunderstandings and disputes between them. All legal claims, including the EEOC charges, have been withdrawn. To the parties' knowledge, the EEOC has not made any findings or conclusions about the charges, as incorrectly reported in the press, because the parties were able to resolve their differences without the EEOC's involvement.

UNM's equal employment opportunity policies call for prompt investigation and discussion with concerned employees to resolve any misunderstandings or disputes. A spokesperson for UNM stated, "We are glad to have had the chance to utilize the steps in our EEO policy in this situation. Resolving these issues amicably shows that the steps for resolution really do work when employees are equally as committed to using them as UNM is." UNM will continue to enforce its strong policy of providing equal employment opportunities for all employees, responding promptly to any concerns raised by employees, and providing training on these subjects. A UNM spokesperson said "Ms. Lopez has always been a strong performer and a loyal employee and we are looking forward to continuing her employment with us." Paul Krebs said, "We are pleased we could clear the air and everyone involved can move forward in a positive direction." Ms. Lopez states that it is unfortunate the label of sexual harassment was used in this case because it never fit her circumstances. Ms. Lopez states, "I truly wish the best for Coach Locksley and hope he has a great season, and career with UNM. I regret that this misunderstanding may have created a negative perception of Coach Locksley." Sylvia Lopez said, "I feel very positive about working for UNM and know I can be an asset to the University because of my years of experience and skills." Paul Krebs, Vice President of Athletics and UNM President David Schmidly said, "We stand behind Coach Locksley and know that he has performed and continues to perform his job in a professional and respectable manner and will do so in the future."

Ms. Lopez states she will continue to be a season ticket-holder of all Lobo athletic programs.
